Great Room Wood Floors, Day Two

We’re about 1/3 to 1/2 through laying down hardwood in the great room…

I woke up late this morning after staying up too late. I sense a pattern here. Mom came over just after I got done walking the dogs, and we launched right into laying down flooring.
In case you’re wondering, we’re using a mixture of white and red oak which we procured from up the road. Check our our Wood Flooring section for more info.
No tongue and groove; this is simple plank wood. After planing it to thickness (3/4″) and sawing to widths (full inches above 5″ and half inches below; ie 3.5″, 4″ 4.5″, 5″, 6″, 7″, 8″, 9″ and 10″), we lay resin paper (to prevent squeaking) and then lay the planks against straight walls.
Once a run is laid, we need to get the next one as darn close to the previous as we can. We accomplish this by screwing down a short length of two-by-four to the floor and driving an oak wedge between it and the plank to be laid. The further we drive the wedge the narrower (if any) the gap between the new and old plank. In this way, we minimize gaps between the planks. We’re in the most humid season now, so the wood will shrink some.
Bob came over in the afternoon, as did Kate, Zeke and Xander. All help much appreciated! Dad even jumped right into sawing widths after he got home from work this evening. (I went over after dinner at the Phillipsons – thanks, Kate!)
Tomorrow morning, Shelly’s husband, Greg will be over to help hammer. Mom will be around, of course, and so will Bob and Kathy or Kate. I expect not to be able to finish tomorrow, unfortunately, which ultimately will mean a day in Phillipson’s basement for Jean and the kids on Wednesday, but I think we’ll get pretty far.
We’ll rent the sander tomorrow (the rental place is closed Sunday) and then begin sanding Sunday afternoon or evening. By Monday afternoon, I’ll be able to begin varnishing and hopefully by Wednesday it should be ready to walk on. The rub of it is that I pick up Jean on Tuesday night and can’t take off any more time. So I’ll probably be spending the nights this week moving furniture back…wish us luck!
